Free tours aren't free: they're pay-what-you-want
One of the most common questions before joining a free tour is simple: how much do you have to pay? The short answer is there's no fixed price. Free tours run on the pay-what-you-want model: you don't book any amount in advance, you walk the whole route with your guide, and at the end you leave whatever tip you consider fair based on the experience you had.
That doesn't mean "pay whatever": it's an unspoken agreement between visitor and guide, who makes a living from tips. That's why it helps to know the typical range before starting the route.
How much should you tip?
There's no official figure, but the common practice on free tours across Europe (Barcelona included) puts the suggested tip between €10 and €15 per person for a route of around two hours, with room up to €20 if the experience was especially good or the group was small. For shorter routes (around an hour and a half), some visitors leave a little less, between €8 and €12.
- Short routes (up to 90 min), such as Barcino: The Roman City: roughly €8 to €12 per person.
- 2-hour routes, such as Medieval Barcelona or Hidden Corners of El Raval: roughly €10 to €15 per person.
- 2h 30min routes, such as The Industrial Revolution or Memory of '36: roughly €12 to €20 per person.
These figures are a market reference, not an imposed price: what you decide to leave is always your choice, taking into account the length, the quality of the explanation and your own travel budget.
What affects a "fair" tip?
- Length of the route: the longer it is, the more common it is to lean toward the top of the range.
- Group size: in small groups (like ours, up to 20 people) the guide gives more attention to each visitor.
- Quality of the experience: historical rigour, clarity of the explanation and the guide's energy are usually the factors that weigh the most.
- Travel budget: travelling with a large family isn't the same as travelling as a couple; adjust the tip per person to your own context.
